Hadrian’s Wall and North East England

A 4 day / 4 nights break exploring the Roman Wall and the sights of Northumberland

Day 1
Pick up at Carlisle Station (or wherever is convenient)
Optional visit to Carlisle for museum/cathedral/castle
Along the wall trail to Birdowsald Roman Fort and Lanercost Priory  we will start to see parts of the original wall and turrets
Spend the night at either Brampton or Greenhead

Day 2
Hadrian’s Wall
We visit the most spectacular section of the wall with opportunities to walk a section or two. We visit Vindolanda Fort where the amazing Vindolanda tablets were discovered (voted Britain’s most loved treasure) We will also visit Housesteads Roman Fort
Staying again at Brampton or Greenhead

Day 3
Onwards to Chesters Roman fort and museum before following the old military route and wall into the city of Newcastle upon Tyne where we travel through to Wallsend  to the fort of Segedunum and the award winning museum
We spend the night in Gateshead  near to the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the Centre of Newcastle , The Sage centre and The Baltic gallery

Day 4
Via  Angel of the North to Durham an ancient city with a spectacular Cathedral and Castle
Optional visit to Jarrow Monastery and Bedes World Heritage centre
Night in Gateshead

Extra/Alternative day
An extra or alternative day can be spent travelling North on the Northumberland Coast to visit Alnwick Castle a wonderful inhabited Castle used as Hogwarts School in the Harry Potter films and home of the Percy family Dukes of Northumberland. Then travelling up the coast via Bamburgh Castle to Lindesfarne or Holy Island
